Biography

After arriving at Surrey in the autumn of 2007, Usman had a solid first season at the Brit Oval, scoring 975 first-class runs at a strong average of 46.4. His stand out knock for the Club so far was the 134* he scored on his debut, flaying a Lancashire attack that included England star Andrew Flintoff. With three England caps to his name – and the hope to add many more – he has undoubted class and Brown Caps fans will be hoping he can produce the consistent middle-order runs needed to spearhead the Surrey revival over the next few years. Another useful facet of Afzaal’s game are his left arm orthodox spinners which, particularly in the One Day game, have proved adept at slowing down run rates and forcing batsmen into giving their wickets away with some fairly average shots. Evidence of this is provided by his impressive average of 26.96 in fifty over cricket and 33.2 in the Twenty20 game.
