Surrey batting coach, Graham Thorpe will spend the month of February with the England Lions as batting coach for their upcoming tour in the United Arab Emirates.
The tour will last just over two weeks and will take in a Twenty20 match against the UAE, three Twenty20 matches and three fifty over games against Pakistan A as well as a Twenty20 game against England.
Thorpe will start the one month secondment on 1 February when he spends the first two days with the squad at Loughborough University before they fly to Sharjah on 6 Feb.
The first match of the tour kicks off on 10 Feb and is set to conclude on 26 Feb after which time he will rejoin Surrey.
Commenting on the appointment of Thorpe to the ECB, Surrey Cricket Managing Director Gus Mackay said, “This is a fantastic opportunity for Graham to further develop his skills as a coach so it was something I was more than happy for him to go and do. I’m sure it will also be a great chance for the Lions squad to work with someone who has had a huge amount of experience at the highest level.”
Thorpe added, “I’m really looking forward to the tour and working with the Lions squad. It’s a great opportunity for me and I’m grateful to Surrey for giving me the freedom to take it on. Over the course of my time with the team I hope that I can offer them some good advice and be someone they learn a lot from.”
Thorpe played for the Brown Caps between 1988 and 2005. Following his retirement, he spent three seasons at NSW cricket as batting and assistant coach before heading back to work in the UK where he was later employed by Surrey in November 2008.
