Surrey Young Cricketers Launch at the Brit Oval

30 April 2009

The Club are launching a major new campaign to get 15,000 Surrey children playing cricket by 2012 and are staging a star-studded launch event at the Brit Oval on Wednesday May 13th.

All are welcome at the event - which will take place after the Friends Provident Trophy match against Gloucestershire and will give people the chance to find out more about the Club's plans for promoting and expanding the game of cricket in Surrey, as well as making the most of the talented young cricketers who develop in the county.

Over 10,000 children and young people already participate in cricket in Surrey and the Surrey Young Cricketers target is to increase that to 15,000 by 2012.

Those attending the launch event will have a chance to hear in more detail what the charity does, who it helps and how in turn they can help. There will also be the opportunity to meet Surrey players past and present who are a product of the domestic coaching system and would not have played cricket at the highest level without the support of the Surrey Cricket Board.

The patron of the Surrey Young Cricketers, Sir John Major, KG, CH said: "The work of the Surrey Cricket Board, both in Inner London and the wider county, is vital, and I am delighted to be Patron of this important endeavour.

"With your support, Surrey Young Cricketers can identify new cricketing talent, develop the game across the area and also provide wider recreation and structured activities for those to whom such opportunities might not otherwise be available.

"These are, I know, difficult times for all charities, but any support you feel able to give would be appreciated enormously, not just by the Surrey Cricket Board, but by those who will benefit most from your generosity - both physically and socially: the youngest in our communities."

Surrey legend Alec Stewart, who is also supporting the scheme, added: "The development of the game in Surrey depends almost entirely on the money raised by the Surrey Cricket Board. By donating to this cause, you will be helping the next generation of cricketers in Surrey with new facilities, coaching courses and equipment.

"In years to come, the cricket pitches and playgrounds of Surrey and England will directly see the benefits of your donation."

Anybody wishing to attend the event should contact George Foster on gfoster@surreycricket.com or pick up a ticket from the Membership Office at the Brit Oval. For further information, please watch the video at the top of this website.
