Steven Davies: Hungry to Score for Surrey
23 October 2009
New signing Steve Davies has arrived at the Brit Oval and is hungry to start scoring the runs that will propel towards the England team.
Davies was at the ground today for the first time in a number of years and told Surrey TV that once he found out that Chris Adams and Gus Mackay wanted to bring him here, there was only one place he wanted to be.
“It’s a big Club with big ambition and it’s great to be a part of it”, he said. “It was a massive decision for me to leave Worcestershire. To be honest I had a few counties that were interested in me but as soon as I spoke to Grizz and Gus I knew this was the place I wanted to play.”
Steve will report back for winter training at the start of November but will fly out to South Africa later in the month ahead of joining up with the England Test squad for their main winter tour – and establishing himself as the country’s number one wicketkeeper batsman is currently top of his agenda, an ambition helped by the traditionally batsmen friendly Brit Oval pitches.
“I realise now that I want to play for England and to do that I need to be scoring a lot of runs with Matty Prior doing so well”, he admitted. “Obviously the wicket was a big pull for me.”
As with his former Worcestershire colleague Gareth Batty – who signed for Surrey simultaneously to Davies and spoke to Surrey TV last week – Davies was full of praise for the pantheon of cricketing legends signed up as coaches by Chris Adams.
“[Another big pull for me was] Alec Stewart for my keeping, Graham Thorpe for my batting and obviously Chris Adams is a great leader and will manage the team brilliantly”, he told Mark Church. “There aren’t many teams in the country with a coaching staff like that so I’m going to make full use of it and progress my game.”
