Shaw and Rainford-Brent in Provisional WT20 Squad
1 March 2010
Surrey stars Nicky Shaw and Ebony Rainford-Brent have been included in the England Women's provisional squad for the upcoming ICC World Twenty20 in the West Indies.
Shaw and Rainford-Brent, currently playing in England's ongoing tour of India, were both impressive during last year's ICC World Twenty20 in England and have maintained their places ever since.
Sadly, despite some impressive performances by both players, England have lost the fifty over series by three games to with the hosts taking the honours by winning the fourth game - played on Friday - by five wickets with a massive 32 balls remaining.
However, England have bounced back impressively, claiming a consolation win in today's final match by two wickets with Danielle Wyatt and Katherine Brunt seeing out a nail biter in Mumbai after Shaw had been the pick of England's bowlers with 3/34 from ten overs. She had taken the field as England's captain after regular skipper Charlotte Edwards was rested.
Speaking about the 20 man squad for the ICC World Twenty20 Clare Connor, the head of England Women's Cricket said: "There is real strength in depth to this squad and this is testament to the development of players at County level and within the England women's Academy set-up.
"The 14 players eventually chosen will be faced with the exciting challenge of retaining the World Twenty20 following our victory in last year’s tournament in England. The women’s game continues to grow in popularity and we are delighted that the men's and women's semi-finals and finals will be played as double-headers in the Caribbean, just as they were in England in 2009."
