Second XI defeated by Middlesex
28 May 2009
The Surrey Second XI were defeated by Middlesex today in a Twenty20 friendly at Cranleigh School.
A new venue, the delightful Cranleigh School ground, provided the backdrop for Surrey 2nd XI’s second venture into Twenty20 cricket.
After winning the toss Surrey batted first with a disastrous start as four wickets were lost for 17 runs by the fifth over. Main destroyer was Danny Evans who took wickets in both his first two overs and finished eventually with 3-20. Alex Tudor came to the rescue with 45 from 51 balls, adding 45 with Seren Waters (21) and 30 with Murtaza Hussain (16 not out). However the side could only muster 111-9 in their twenty overs, a total which contained only six boundaries.
An experienced Middlesex team had little trouble overhauling the Surrey score. Captain Nick Compton hit 46 from 43 deliveries but fell to a brilliant tumbling catch by Jade Dernbach from the bowling of Simon King, and Gareth Berg added 24 from 21 balls as Middlesex moved to a 5 wicket victory. Surrey bowled well and took Middlesex to the nineteenth over. Tudor (1-26), King (1-18) and Stuart Meaker (1-16) were the wicket-takers along with trialist leg-spinner Cullen Bailey who captured two wickets for 23 in his four overs.
