Perfect Sunday for Surrey
Perfect Sunday for Surrey
22 June 2009
Sunday was a perfect day for Surrey Cricket as all seven age group teams that were in action came away with victories.
Sides representing the Club’s U10, U11, U12, U13 Boys and Girls, U15 and the Pemberton Greenish Academy were all winners with a number of stand out performances for every team.
The wins came in a mixture of friendly and competitive matches with the U15s and U13 girls both getting their victories in the LV County Championships for their respective age groups.
U10 – The U-10’s had an excellent day’s cricket in an idyllic setting at Felsted School in Essex. The Surrey team's highlight was an outstanding fielding display which saw Dominic Johnsen take two excellent catches followed by four run outs. This display was another mature performance and showed a high level of skill that has set the standard for future games. Pru Anandpura bowled with control and finished with three wickets. George Elliston, who was making his debut bowled with pace and accuracy, and Ben Lane’s five overs cost just 3 runs. Essex finished on 130-9 off their 40 overs. Surrey got over the winning line with 7 overs to spare which was achieved, in the main, through 51no from Owen Kennett and 39no by Dominic Johnsen. Surrey U-10’s won by 8 wkts.
U11 – A good spell by the Surrey U-11 spinners, especially Tom Homes (8-4-7-1), slowed Hampshire's rate right down and with a stunning one-handed diving catch by Ryan Patel and a sterling show by our first-time wicket-keeper, Hayden Storey with 2 catches and 2 stumpings, Hampshire were bowled out for 108 in the 40th over. Patel also returned excellent figures of 7.2-2-16-3. Surrey’s opening pair of Rajan Soni and Umar Ahmed took a steady non-risk approach against all 12 of Hampshire’s bowlers to chase the total down in only 22 overs. Soni finished with 59 not out and Ahmed 35 not out to complete a 10 wicket victory.
U12 – Surrey U-12’s recorded their first win of the season against Cranmore School U-13’s. Batting first on a difficult pitch with short boundaries, Surrey reached 184-8 with Nick Winder the pick of the batters (37) ably supported by Bobby Patel’s 22 not out towards the end of the innings. Cranmore U-13’s got off to a flier in their innings but lost wickets regularly. Needing only 50 off the final 17 overs, they lost their last 5 wickets for 30 runs with Surrey eventually winning by 12 runs. The pick of the Surrey bowlers were Samad Suleman (7-0-31-3) and captain Robbie Hughes (3-0-17-2).
U13 – The U-13 side experienced a tense victory in their second ECB Cup match against Hertfordshire in an evenly-matched battle, coming out successful by just 2 runs. Batting first, Surrey worked their way up to 145 off their 40 overs for the loss of 8 wickets. The innings was based around 2 partnerships of 70 between Dominic Sibley (51) and Matthew Stiddard (15) and then 41 between Sibley and Greg Dann (19). Hertfordshire were always in the hunt and paced their innings well. They required 47 off the last 10 overs with 8 wickets in hand, however the introduction of Calum Basey proved pivotal as he bowled 5 overs, 3 wickets for 14 runs. It left Hertfordshire needing 9 to win off the last over and even with Sibley bowling a wide 2nd ball that also went for 2 runs, he stayed calm to end the innings with a dot ball as Hertfordshire needed 3 to win off the last ball. The bowling of Connor Newbold (8-1-20-1) and Stiddard (8-1-20-0) was equally vital through the middle overs denying Hertfordshire the opportunity of getting ahead of the run rate. This was the U-13’s second win from 2 matches in the ECB U-13 Cup.
U13 Girls – The Surrey Girls U-13’s played Sussex at Mynthurst CC which proved to be a low scoring game in which Surrey bowled Sussex out for 54. This was made possible by another fine bowling display from Jenny Tippell who took 5 wickets for 7 runs in 5 over’s. This followed up her 5 wickets for 17 last week against the same opposition. Surrey knocked the runs off in 12.1 over’s with Evan Vantassel-Jolly, Hannah Jones, and Libby Walters all chipping in with 9. This leaves Surrey top of their group in the LV County U-13 Championship with 4 games left to play and the girls looking towards qualifying for the quarter-final stage.
U15 – The U-15 side beat Sussex comprehensively by 98 runs at the Blackstone ground in Sussex in their final ECB Cup group match. Batting first, Surrey made excellent progress with Bradley Scriven and Harry Stephens providing the bulk of the runs with 89 each and Aman Shinwari providing a late flourish with 38 not out off 15 balls. Surrey’s final total of 297-4 was always likely to prove too much and with a decent opening spell from Shinwari and Nooray Ali Arab, Sussex were always behind the run rate. Sussex were finally bowled out for 199 with Adam Dyson picking up 4 wkts and Nooray Ali finishing off the tail with 2 wkts. This was the 2nd successive win in the ECB Cup for the U-15’s and it means that they are through to the quarter-final of this competition; match to be played in July.
PG Academy – The Pemberton Greenish Academy recorded a victory in their second match of the season against Kennington United. A full report on this match is available by clicking here.
