Glamorgan Bat All Day

25 September 2009

Glamorgan batted for almost the entire third day of the LV County Championship match at the Brit Oval, scoring a mammoth 702/8 behind centuries from Jim Allenby and Mark Wallace.

Starting the day in an immensely strong position of 271/0, Gareth Rees and Mark Cosgrove pushed on first thing before the Australian was the first out for 175, run out by a good throw from Stewart Walters to leave Glamorgan 315/1.

William Bragg joined Rees and the two put on another fifty before Rees was caught behind by Jonathan Batty off the bowling of Richard Logan.

Mike Powell was next in and helped Bragg take the score to 400 before being brilliantly caught by Stewart Walters at second slip, again off Logan. Bragg then went without adding another run, also caught by Walters, but this time at gully off Chris Jordan.

Jordan struck again soon afterwards, bowling former England One Day star Jamie Dalrymple for just four to leave the Welshmen on 405/5 and potentially looking at a significantly lower score than they had anticipated.

However, Jim Allenby and Mark Wallace were in no mood to roll over and put together a brilliant 240 run partnership, with Wallace in particular showing no mercy as he hit the ball to all parts of Kennington with serious aplomb, clocking up 139 at just over a run a ball before attempting to reverse sweep Rangana Herath and being given LBW.

James Harris carried on scoring and pulled Chris Schofield for four before being snapped up by Jonathan Batty next ball for 15. The wicket was Surrey legend Batty’s 500th first class catch for the Club.

Although they were looking at an all time Club record score, Glamorgan declared on 702/8 when Allenby was bowled by Herath for 137, leaving Surrey a tricky seven over spell to negotiate.

Michael Brown and Batty were doing just that, when Garnett Kruger – who had already caused significant damage in the first innings – got one through Brown’s defences and he was bowled for 17.

Logan was sent in as a night watchman and survived the necessary three balls to leave Surrey 24/1 at the end of the day, needing another 248 to avoid an innings defeat or having to bat out the final day to secure a draw.

Tomorrow will be the final day of LV County Championship cricket at the Brit Oval for 2010 and play will start at 10.30am.
