Butcher to Captain Surrey in London Derby
29 June 2009
Mark Butcher is to return to the Surrey squad and will skipper his side for this week’s crucial London derby against Middlesex at Lord’s.
Butcher leads a side that also includes Mark Ramprakash, returning after being rested at the end of the Twenty20 Cup campaign and wicket keeper Jonathan Batty and fast bowler Alex Tudor, both of whom have been impressive for the Club’s Second XI in recent weeks.
There is also a place for local off spinner Simon King, who made his debut for the Club against Kent on Sunday, bowling economical figures against a very strong Spitfires side featuring seven international players.
The full Surrey squad to play Middlesex at Lord’s from Tuesday June 30th to Friday July 3rd is:
Surrey’s in form fast bowler Jade Dernbach is unavailable for selection at Lord’s due to an ongoing shin injury.
Chris Adams’ team are currently second in the Liverpool Victoria County Championship, 22 points behind leaders Gloucestershire, with a number of key games looming over the coming weeks. After the trip to Lord’s, they will host Kent at the Brit Oval (July 10-13) and Essex at the annual Guildford Festival (July 15-18) in games that are likely to have a big say in all the team’s promotion ambitions.
Speaking before the game, Surrey Professional Cricket Manager Chris Adams said: “Surrey and Middlesex games always have a special ring to them and I am sure this one will be no different.
“I was pleased with the progress we made on our recent three game away trip and hope that the team can produce four more days of consistently good cricket. The table is very tightly packed at the moment, so another victory could help us put some distance between us and the rest of the pack.”
