Another Win for Surrey Women
Another Win for Surrey Women
28 July 2010
Surrey Women have secured another victory as they bid to return to the top level of the LV= County Championship, defeating Middlesex by 51 runs to move to third in the table at the halfway stage of this year's competition.
Surrey won the toss and chose to bat on a dry wicket under grey skies. Oli Thorogood fell to some early swing before Olivia Anderson and Cecily Scutt consolidated with a partnership of 57. Scutt (19) fell with the score on 62 and new captain Sarah Clarke (1) was out in the following over. 63-3.
Holly Knight (37) and Anderson rebuilt the innings with a partnership of 71, before a mix up left Knight stranded in the middle of the wicket. Amy Page (32) joined Anderson for another period of consolidation before Anderson fell for a well constructed 83, edging behind to the keeper. Surrey prodded and scampered their way towards 200, and finished with 208-9 from 50 overs.
Katherine Robson and Natalie Sciver (0-20) shared the new ball, and Robson struck first with a smart catch from keeper Lucy Binns. Middlesex rallied briefly before Robson claimed the second wicket with a great diving catch from Sciver at mid-on.
Holly Knight (2-25) claimed two wickets in two overs to reduce Middlesex to 50-4, and when Middlesex captain Jenny Halstead spooned the ball back to Robson (3-12), Surrey were totally on top.
A brief partnership of 40 gave Middlesex a little hope, before the leg spin of Clarke (1-33) slowed the scoring rate and claimed a wicket. 96-6.
Surrey took another wicket at 117, and some sharp fielding from Oli Thorogood and a good take from Clarke at the bowler's end ran out Middlesex's number 9. 119-8.
A late flurry from Middlesex briefly halted Surrey before Scutt (1-28) returned to claim the 10th wicket with her left arm spin, and Laura Pierce (2-27) wrapped up the win with an LBW shout.
A comfortable 51-run victory takes Surrey to third in the table at the halfway stage, with the top three teams all only separated by bonus points.
Surrey also played a friendly against the MCC at Shepperton CC on Monday July 26th. Sarah Clarke’s side won by five wickets with Olivia Anderson scoring a brilliant 117* and Cecily Scutt picking up three wickets.
