Another win for PG Academy

22 June 2009

The Pemberton Greenish Surrey Academy completed a season double against local rivals Kennington United, winning a closely contested match by seven wickets.

With KUCC batting first on a track that offered support for all bowlers throughout the day, the PG Academy side were challenged to execute and maintain high skill levels throughout the day, especially with the ball rolling fast over the hard, bumpy outfield.

The PG Academy bowled well, with KUCC losing wickets at regular intervals and never truly establishing a platform to build a big score. Once again, young left arm spin bowler Freddie Van Den Bergh was one of the most effective bowlers, taking three wickets to back up the seam bowlers, who frequently made the ball rear severely from a good length.

KUCC eventually accumulated 132, leaving the PG Academy a relatively small total to chase down. However, they were soon two wickets down and the fall of Tom Lancefield put the score on 45/3 with runs becoming harder to come by.

Rory Burns and Zafar Ansari played well together though, playing bravely and intelligently and taking a few upper body blows to develop a partnership that wore down the bowling of the opposition. Both players batted through gritted teeth as they each scored 45 not out to see Surrey home in what was a challenging contest.

Speaking to the official website after the game, PG Academy Director Gareth Townsend said: “I think the day was a big success for Kennington United and the game was played in an atmosphere of great fun and community participation.

“Surrey will continue to support this fixture in coming years and hopefully our relationship can be strengthened by such matches.”
