Afzaal Continues to Skipper Surrey for Twenty20

24 June 2009

Usman Afzaal will continue to skipper the Surrey Brown Caps as they continue the second phase of the domestic Twenty20 Cup today with a home tie against the Kent Spitfires.

Afzaal is joined in the squad by other in form stars such as Jade Dernbach, who took seventeen wickets in three matches in Surrey’s recent three match road trip in the LV County Championship; Andre Nel who took his first six wicket haul for Surrey against Northamptonshire and Gary Wilson, who is returning from ICC World Twenty20 duty with Ireland.

Another man returning to action is New Zealand all rounder Grant Elliott who comes back into the squad after taking a three week break to allow Australian Ryan Harris to play in Surrey’s recent LV County Championship games against Glamorgan and Northamptonshire. Elliott was unavailable for Monday’s away defeat to the Sussex Sharks.

The full Surrey Brown Caps squad to play the second phase of the Twenty20 Cup is:

Usman Afzaal (Captain)
Scott Newman
Mark Ramprakash
Stewart Walters
Matthew Spriegel
Chris Jordan
Grant Elliott
James Benning
Gary Wilson
Chris Schofield
Pedro Collins
Andre Nel
Jade Dernbach

The Brown Caps will be attempting to bounce back after suffering a defeat away at Hove on Monday and draw inspiration from other Surrey sides after every one of the Club’s age group teams were victorious this weekend. Wins were recorded by male sides in the U10, U11, U12, U13 and U15 categories as well as the U13 Girls XI and the Pemberton Greenish Surrey Academy, who beat Lambeth side Kennington United in one of two annual fixtures played between the teams.

Surrey’s Professional Cricket Manager Chris Adams said: “It is always great to hear about our age group sides doing well and hopefully they have set the standard for the first team to aspire for the rest of the week.

“The Twenty20 Cup is a big tournament for us and all the players are very keen to show people what they are capable of. We have four games left to play in the group stages and if we win them all we should have a good shout of getting into the quarter-finals no matter what the other teams do.

“We have shown on a number of occasions this year that, on our day, we are capable of beating anybody. What we need is the consistency to start beating teams with regularity.”

Live ball by ball commentary, courtesy of BBC London 94.9, will be provided on all games on www.surreycricket.com and full highlights of each day’s play will also be available on the site shortly after close on each day, with the exception of the final home game against Middlesex Panthers, highlights of which will be available early the following morning.
