Community Projects

Working in partnership with the community...

Surrey County Cricket Club has a proud heritage of engaging with the local community, and we are committed to making our programmes in and around the Brit Oval accessible to local people of all ages and backgrounds.

The Club's community programme spans a number of areas from coaching to education with a team that includes community coaches, tutors, and mentors all of whom are connected to the Club.

Playing for Success

Playing for Success (PfS) is the flagship programme that takes place in the Ben Hollioake Learning Centre.  It is a Department for Children, Schools and Families (DCSF) programme that was established in 1997, initially in partnership with football clubs and then with other sports clubs from 2000 onwards.

The ten-week programme takes place over three school terms, and aims to improve the motivations of young people, increase their self-esteem and aid them in becoming more effective learners and better achievers. Participants on the programme develop confidence and key study skills in literacy, numeracy and ICT with the use of Apple iMac computers which can be used on both Macintosh and Windows formats. This is complemented with a cricket session in the adjacent Lambeth Hall delivered by a qualified cricket coach courtesy of the Club and programme sponsor Connaught plc. This culminates in an end of term ceremony where pupils are awarded for their attitude, achievement, attendance and effort. The top awards winners receive a complimentary pair of tickets to a major match at the Brit Oval.

If your school is interested in taking part or for further information, please contact the Centre Manager on 020 7820 5743 or email pfs@surreycricket.com You can also read more by downloading the Ben Hollioake Learning Centre Brochure.

Playing for Success could only be delivered with the support and help from Connaught Plc.  Connaught is the UK's leading integrated Service Provider, operating in the social housing, public sector and compliance markets.  The financial support given by Connaught allows every participant on PfS to enjoy 15 hours of cricket coaching per term, tickets to major cricket matches, and membership to the Hollioake Club (Surrey's junior membership scheme).  We are very grateful of their support.

ECHO Project

ECHO, which stands for Equality, Coaching and Healthy Options is a schools based project run in conjunction with Fulham FC Community Sport Trust. It delivers both Football and Cricket coaching to primary and secondary schools in Lambeth over five weeks. The scheme is also designed to teach simple healthy living messages that will tackle important issues facing young people today. these messages are:

  • Eat five portions of fruit and vegetables per day
  • Always eat a healthy breakfast
  • Drink plenty of water
  • Keep active
  • Good friendships are always important

The project has been running since 2007 and delivers in PE, breakfast and after school sessions with the aim of reaching every school in Lambeth.

Kennington United Cricket Club

Kennington United Cricket Club is an extremely important community cricket programme. It is the only cricket club in Lambeth and provides the only opportunity for hundreds of inner city residents of all ages, back grounds and gender to play cricket at all levels.

The major project that Surrey is working with Kennington United is to build a Community Pavilion on the Kennington Park Extension. The project is a partnership venture between Surrey County Cricket Club, Kennington United CC and the London Borough of Lambeth. The Pavilion will provide a modern, flagship facility for both the local club and the surrounding community. It will be a major focal point and be used often by community groups and organisations for meetings and training. It will include:

  • Upgraded changing room facilities for players and officials
  • A spacious clubroom leading on to a purpose built veranda
  • A kitchenette/bar facility
  • A learning resource facility

Other key community partners include the Friends of Kennington Park, Kennington Association and Henry Fawcett school. It also has much support from the Metropolitan Police. For more information on the project or to show your support for the scheme, please email community@surreycricket.com re: KUCC Community Pavilion

Brit Howzat Project

Run in conjunction with Playing with Success, the project opens the doors of the Brit Oval to schools in Lambeth and South London. Schools use both the Ben Hollioake Learning Centre to deliver a normal curriculum lesson and the adjacent Lambeth Hall for a coaching session to provide a unique day out for the pupils. The children are also taken on a tour of the stadium and are given tickets to attend a cricket match at the Brit Oval.

For more information on Brit Howzat, please email the Brit Howzat tutor at brithowzat@surreycricket.com

Prince's Trust

The Prince’s Trust cricket initiative is run in conjunction with Lambeth College and is a part of a wider scheme across the country with other cricket clubs.

Based in their own delivery room at the Brit Oval, three 12-week programmes use the spirit of the game to help change young lives. The programme works with unemployed and underprivileged 16-25 year olds who take part in fundraising, community outreach, coaching and work placements, helptng to rebuild their confidence and give them a base from which to rebuild their lives.

The Double Club

The Double Club is a joint project between Surrey County Cricket Club, Arsenal Football Club and Archbishop Tenison’s School. It delivers three lessons per week of football/cricket inspired literacy and numeracy activity to 15 children from one class who are underachieving with their general school work. Each lesson is themed around a certain football or cricketing activity, and is designed to engage the children with an interesting subject, whilst at the same time teaching them literacy and numeracy skills.
The teacher, James Singleton also delivers half a day each week delivering similar activity at St Saviour’s Primary School. When not occupied with the 1.5 days of Double Club activity, James delivers PE lessons for Archbishop Tenison’s and Playing for Success in the Ben Hollioake Learning Centre.

Gifted and Talented

In 2009, we increased the amount of activity in the Ben Hollioake Learning Centre to include a full daytime programme of teaching. For two days each week, we invited Lambeth schools to send their Gifted and Talented pupils to attend specialised lessons, delivered by Ben Hollioake Learning Centre staff.
The idea behind the Gifted and Talented programme is that pupils feel comfortable in both the surroundings and with their piers – i.e. the fact that their classmates are be of a similar high standard will allow them to perform to the highest standard.
This project is supported kindly by the Girdlers’ Livery Company, who donate a substantial amount of money to help reduce the cost to schools.
